Why Gastronomikal?

One of my favorite Greek films, Πολιτικη Κουζινα, translated in English to A touch of spice, would be more appropriately and directly named Political Cuisine, but that’s not quite as heart-warming of a title. The film is based around the mass deportation between Greece and Turkey in the 1920’s and focuses on the role food plays throughout ones life in every situation. My favorite scene shows a grandfather explaining to his grandson the connection between the cosmoses and spice, food, and flavors. He tells him that the word γαστρονομια (gastronomy) conceals within it the word αστρονομια (astronomy). It’s this notion of making a connection between the broadness of our lives to food; how our food choices impact each of us, our health, our environment, our communities, our politics, our history, and our bellies that brought me to this blog. And since I love everything about food and find it phenomenal, this gives me a chance to share my love with you and inspire you to consider food in a way you might not have before…that’s gastronomikal!

I wish! I use to own it but it was stolen from me. I hope those Oakland thieves are enjoying it and all the other movie and CDs they took!
